Although he was born in Guernsey, he spent his early years at a tough school in north London where he was discovered by his first art teacher as he explained:

"I am dyslexic, and in the 1950s nobody really knew about it, but I found I could just draw and paint as a child, so in some ways it was an outlet for me.

I was coached by this teacher who saw I could draw and he coached me for the 13+ exams".

That experience was to form the basis of his first tentative steps into the world of art, "From there I went on to art college in Harrow and I never looked back because I really thrived there".
